If I wanted censored content I'd go to reddit. Keep it free.

Never had the occasion to walk through any heavy-on-censorship subreddit; is it really that bad? What subreddits are the worst?

Just go there sometimes for tech support / info about open-source software, so not really that much to censor.

It just depends on the sub. The company policy sucks and makes the sub mods enforce some dumb shit but usually the smaller or hobby focused subs are pretty chill.

After some mediocre debate involving the creator of the software that powers this website and her lack of support of free speech I figured I'd ask the community here what they thought. After all, this is your community.

While the main topics of discussion here stem around technology, privacy, information sharing and anonymity networks I also don't believe in stifling speech so long as it's in the appropriate, user created forum.

I'm working on a bunch of wiki content as well, and I'll go into detail as to how you can block both a forum and it's content as well as specific members of your choosing from your view. This way, if you have a moral objection to the content of any forum(s) or member(s) you can erase them from your existence here and carry on as if they do not exist, because to you, they will not.

But hey, that's just my take on it. What's yours?

free speech = getting human audiences and killing bots! :D

bots are not human and do not have natural rights so they are exempt from free speech.

censorship is the easy way out. the real challenge is using your speech to counter other's because that requires thinking critically and censorship is just pressing a button.

Free speech also requires not self-destructing when you find out someone has the wrong opinion.

Well, here is the conversation that got me banned: https://raddle.me/f/Postmill/123713/new-postmill-instance-ramble-pw

Postmill is the name of the software that this site uses, though it was created for that authoritarian site. Someone linked to this site, stating concern over our TOS. That forum is more or less the official forum for the software.

Luckily, I forked the software so we can continue private community development of it, as the license allows for, and we can push it as a platform for all. Not just the extreme-left.

So you said:

I'd just as happily allow an antifa forum just as I would a proudboys forum. They both deserve a safe platform for discussion as far as I'm concerned.

And then this "ziq" fellow, an admin, said:

(nazis) deserve a safe platform

banned

So you literally were banned for saying that the Proud Boys have free speech. That's telling. Usually people like that make excuses and blame it on your "hateful conduct" in your back-and-forth argument with emma. I'll give ziq credit: he came right out and said it's for believing that his political enemies had rights.

Yeah, I was a bit taken back by it. I thought I was being cordial enough with emma, especially since her and I had communicated offsite before and she was polite and helpful.

I still stand by what I said though. I don't have to agree with someone to understand that they have rights that are important.

cordial enough

Eh, I didn't read it that way at all. Tone is very easy to misinterpret over written communicaiton. So you may have typed what you typed with a friendly and warm state of mind, but your words could easily me interpreted (in my opinion) as someone who is annoyed. Nothing you said was really unhinged or awful, but I don't think the majority of users would read your posts as cordial.

I still stand by what I said though.

That's why I'm here. If you don't like something online, go somewhere else. Free speech, contrary to the back assword understanding of the concept as described in their /w/freespeech page, is an essential tool for the underdogs to ensure the establishment doesn't become corrupt, out of touch, and predatory.

Rambler OP wrote

After review, you're right. I was definitely annoyed.

And that kind of introspection and honesty puts you light years ahead of the authoritarian Leftist horde. :)

Free speech, and its means are double-edged swords. Free speech is not really free but some people want to make the supporting technology behind it absolutely free because of violent censorship and strong distrust in their central governments. Morality is a bitch. It is hard to fight a corrupt bitch.
