The advancement of science and technology is seen as an automatic means of improving people's lives. Anything that may cast doubt on the reliability of science and technology is often not publicly available. New planes are often talked about, but not victims of crashes and air pollution; increase in pesticide production but not the Bhopal disaster and environmental poisoning figures; the high yield of the green revolution, but not the harmful effect on the environment and the destruction of traditional skills and knowledge.

A sense of technological superiority became part of racist theories. The ideological use of science and technology as a measure of human worth imposes similar assumptions on the inhabitants of the "inner colonies" of the modern state and society: dalits, women and adivasis. There are strong indications that the sense of superiority of the urban elite is based on the same assumptions as the old colonial masters.
