New planes are often talked about, but not victims of crashes and air pollution; increase in pesticide production but not the Bhopal disaster and environmental poisoning figures; the high yield of the green revolution, but not the harmful effect on the environment and the destruction of traditional skills and knowledge.
A sense of technological superiority became part of racist theories. The ideological use of science and technology as a measure of human worth imposes similar assumptions on the inhabitants of the "inner colonies" of the modern state and society: dalits, women and adivasis. There are strong indications that the sense of superiority of the urban elite is based on the same assumptions as the old colonial masters.
