I have been using the Ooma VOIP residential telephone service since sometime in 2015. I switched from a regular landline with AT&T (the oldest telephone service provider in the US) when my monthly bill for basic service climbed above $50 a month. That did not include the cost of making long distance calls. If I remember correctly, my monthly Ooma bill in 2015 was $4.22. That amount has slowly grown over the years to $7.51.
